Name Description
English tall clock with a very early brass dial movement ca 1690-1710, but no later than 1740.

Sold Date: January, 2005
Pre-Auction Estimate: $2000-$2500
Price Realized: $0 unsold
Courtesy of Horton's Antique Clocks

The 8-day movement can be dated by the movement pillar shapes, dial style, and hands. It is signed, "David Compigne, Winton", a Hampshire clockmaker in the early 1700's. This dial and movement are typical of movements made by most clockmakers during this period. The hour and minute hands are original but the second hand may be a replacement. At the top of the dial is a small cut-out with the letters S and N on each side of the cutout?? Strikes hours on a large iron bell on top of the movement. Round seconds dial and square cutout for the calendar day to show. The dial is 12 inches square. It has brass cable and old brass pulleys. Old iron weights and pendulum are intact. The case is an anomaly. The body of the clock has been refinished, but the bonnet has not. The excellent mahogany veneer was applied over the base wood which is also mahogany. The bonnet has full columns set against the door, with brass capitals and bases. Inlay was used above the door, now with some deterioration. The bonnet, ca about 1740, has the original caddy-top but without any finials. There is evidence there may have been two finials at one time. The lower body of the case is more mid to late 1800's. If you can refinish the top to match the base, you will have something very nice. The case is 87 inches high. The movement should be worth our minimum. Reference n "Grandfather Clocks and their cases", Brian Loomes.

English Dial Clock, ca 1850Ős.

Sold Date: July, 2003
Pre-Auction Estimate: $2,200
Price Realized: $3,450
Courtesy of Horton's Antique Clocks

This style clock was developed in England in the late 1700Ős and replaced the Tavern and Act of Parliament clocks that were traditional there for many years. This clock became a schoolroom or officeclock, replacing clocks that were a little more expensive to produce. Tallclocks were being made by everybody in England and this is a takeoff on thetall clock. The bonnet comes off like a grandfather bonnet, painted irondial like the tall clock, long pendulum, large weight, and of course thefairly long 41 inch burl mahogany case similar to tall clocks of that time. The bezel is hinged at the top and has an inside latch at the bottom. The12 inch painted iron dial is in exceptional condition. Dial is signed "Charleston"and has the minute numbers on the quarters outside the time track. We believethe fancy hands to be original. The 8 day, time only brass movement is seatboard mounted. The pendulum rod may be original but the bob is not. The hood, bezel, and inner dial faceplate show evidence of repairs, but well done. The lower front door is key locking and the key is in place. The case haslightwood inlay on the front sides and bottom. The lower door is bowed slightly, as intended. The top of the case behind the bezel is peaked. This is certainlya good early wall clock, well made, and should provide good service for another200 years.

English tall clock, ca 1815, by William Cooper, Hamilton

Sold Date: 1/1/2003
Pre-Auction Estimate: $2,500 (minimum bid)
Price Realized: $2,925
Courtesy of Horton's Antique Clocks

"W. Cooper, Hamilton", written in the dial arch. William Cooper was a clockmaker in Hamilton from 1808-1824. The 8 day movement is standard English, bell strike with the calendar drive intact, a strong running movement. The movement was made by, "Osborne's Manufactory, Birmingham", and so engraved on the iron false plate, which was the custom up to the early 1800's. Painted iron dial has withstood the test of time.Oak, broken arch case is 7 feet, 9 3/4 inches high, 22 inches wide. Brass finials are most likely replacements, but look old. Some mahogany trim and a light wood string inlay. The old case has had many repairs over its lifespan. The base of the case is new and well done. Most English tall clocks have new bases as many of them rested on dirt floors for many years. This is an old clock, with a good many years of reliable service left in her. "Grandfather Clocks & Their Cases", Brian Loomes, page 204-264. It explains how to date English Clocks to within 10 years.

Dial is signed, "Rotherham". Full back door, hinged, with a label, "Made in England". Back wind and set, balance wheel movement, signed, "Rotherham's English Movement". English carved tall case clock, ca 1720.

Sold Date: 1/1/2003
Pre-Auction Estimate: $4,500 (minimum bid)
Price Realized: $4,726
Courtesy of Horton's Antique Clocks

The movement could be from the late 1600's. This dark oak case is 87 1/2 inches tall and was likely made in the Halifax area just north of Manchester, where a majority of the carved cases were made. They were all stained with a black glossy stain after they were carved. The hood has twisted columns in front and full columns in back. There are alternating cross banded inlays of walnut and mahogany around the door, plus a beading around the door. On top is a carved frieze that was probably added when the case was carved. The date "1720" is carved into the case. There is a female? figure carved in the frieze, a female and lion carved in the middle, and a female head on the base. Fluted quarter columns on the middle section. The early 8 day movement is 2 train with calendar and day date, typical bell strike. It is signed, "Tos. Cooper Whitchurch", on the raised silver dial ring. Engraved hour numerals and minute numbers outside the dial ring. Raised seconds ring, etched-beveled arbors, corners offset with cast ornaments, etched brass center. There are large iron weights, a period brass pendulum, key lock door with key.The pillars in the movement are called "finned" pillars and are found in movements made from the late 1600's to 1740. For an excellent treatise on the carved clock and this type movement, read, "Grandfather Clocks & Their Cases", by Brian Loomes, pages 324-330. Page 37 describes finned pillars. An early movement of this type will sell for $2000 or more on the retail market. Truly a great old early clock.

Arthur, Glasgow", is typical of the "Drum Head" clocks of the 1820-1840 period. The round iron dial has a chapter ring, seconds ring, and calendar ring, all in gold paint. Some slight fading of the black numerals on the gold dial ring. Makers name in the middle. None of the hands appear to be original. 81 inch mahogany veneer case with bun feet, tapered case, half columns on the sides, scroll decoration on top. Old iron weights and pendulum. Pulleys, bell, brass movement, all typical English. The movement is 8 day, iron bell on top, strikes the hours. Excellent condition overall, has been serviced and is running. Georgian Country Tallcase Clock, Edward bell, Uttoxeter, Circa 1792-95

Price Date: 7/20/2000
Retail Price: 4750

Oak case with mahogany cross banding and boxwood stringing, swan neck pediment to the hood. Charming painted arch dial in classic 'Adam' style. The paterae to the swan necks are particularly interesting being sphinx.....all things 'Egyptian' were high fashion following Nelson's defeat of the French at the battle of the Nile in 1791. The case has a lovely rich colour and patina, reeded canted corners typical of the case designs in this area. Long Georgian door. The 8 day movement strikes the hours on a bell and there are subsidiary seconds and date dials. Movement has been recently cleaned and is running. This very original clock has had little necessary work carried out. In common with most country clocks the feet have been replaced because of the effects of damp, similarly the bottom quarter of the back board. The case has been treated for woodworm. Edward Bell is listed in 'Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World' Vol 1 by G. H. Baillie, as working ca.1795 and I would place this clock circa 1792 - 95.
